The suspect, 44-year-old Amanda Leeann Porter, was identified after hospital staff at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank discovered she was posing as a licensed nurse from out of state.
Between April 8 and May 8, Porter reportedly cared for approximately 60 patients while fraudulently employed.
Porter, who lacks any nursing license, was terminated after the scheme was uncovered but not before collecting two paychecks.
Police say Porter, a Virginia resident, has a history of fraudulent activity, and is currently on probation for a fraud conviction in her home state.
Investigators allege she continued her deception, obtaining employment at other Southern California hospitals under various aliases.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, Porter was arrested by Burbank Police after bonding out of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s custody for a similar case at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita. Days later, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges against her, including identity theft, false impersonation, and grand theft.
Porter was arraigned on Nov. 13 and is currently being held without bail at the Los Angeles County Central Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.
Detectives believe Porter may have committed additional offenses in the Southern California area over the past year and are looking for more possible victims.
